CBCT is also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It s a radiographic imaging technique that allows accurate 3D imaging of hard tissue structures. It has been proved as a successful investigative modality for the dental and maxillofacial region.it provides accurate volumetric data in axial, sagittal and coronal planes providing higher accuracy. scanning time and radiation exposure is ten times less than conventional CT scan.

It uses a round/rectangular cone-shaped X-ray beam with a single 360-degree scan where the X-ray source and reciprocating detector moves simultaneously around the patients head. The series of images acquired are used to construct the 3D image using a sophisticated algorithm.

It is used to investigate the exact 3D location of jaw pathologies like benign or malignant tumors, inflammatory bone lesions, assess the impacted teeth, the exact location of supernumerary teeth and its relation with nearby vital structures, changes in bones(cortical and trabecular) in bisphosphonates associated bone necrosis.

It is also a better imaging modality in facial fractures, interoperative visualisation of bones after fracture, assessment of metal fragments sec to accidental injuries, localization of the broken dental needle, and gunshot injuries.

it is widely used in fields of endodontics, implant dentistry, periodontics and TMJ lesions
