Dental hygiene is the practice of maintaining good oral/dental health .poor oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay/gum diseases which can affect the other parts of the body.

Bacteria from gum diseases can lead to valvular heart diseases(RHD) clogged arteries(CAD) and stroke. Also, it has been linked with premature births and low birth weight in pregnant women. In diabetes mellitus, the gums are more susceptible to infections which can adversely affect your blood sugar levels. Bad oral hygiene can impair your ability to eat and speak properly causing bad breath and pain in the oral cavity.

You should consult your dentist if you experience pain, bleeding gums, tenderness and aphthous ulcers which do not heal, these may be signs of severe diseases.

Simple tips which can help you maintain good oral hygiene-

  • Use of proper brushing technique.- Use a soft-bristled brush, begin at the gum line and brush at a 45-degree angle. Brush outside, inside and over the molars. Also do not forget to gently brush over your gums and tongue.

  •  Brushing time - Brush at least for 2 minutes by the clock.

  •  Selection of brush- Select a brush that has soft bristles,small-medium sized head.

  •  Flossing technique- use about  18 inches of floss, wind most of it around middle fingers, leaving 1to 2 inches on both sides. Make sure the floss is tight between your thumbs and index finger, then gently slide it between your teeth, using clean sections as you go from tooth to tooth and Gently floss beneath the gum line.

  • Use of mouth wash- It helps in reducing plaques, gum inflammation with its antibacterial activities. Also freshens breath, whitens teeth, and soothes dry mouth.

  • Cleaning Your Brush-  simply rinse it off and let it air dry after brushing. Avoid covering or sharing it

  • Change Your Brush-Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months and after recovering from an illness.

  • Use a Tongue Scraper-A tongue scraper rinses away excessive oral bacteria. Add this practice to your daily oral care routine to eliminate bacteria and freshen your breath. Select a toothbrush with a scraper on the back for added advantage.
